2.PLACES TO KNOW

Chelsea Hotel - Chelsea Hotel is an historic New York City hotel and landmark, known primarily for the notability of its residents over the years. Here's a game. Think of an artist. A writer. A musician. An actor. Now check the list and see if he ever checked in the Chelsea Hotel! Think Dylan Thomas. Answer: yes, he did.

3.PEOPLE TO DISCOVER

Patti Smith: American singer-songwriter, poet and visual artist, who became a highly influential component of the New York City punk rock movement. Her debut album is Horses. In 1967, Patti Smith moved to New York City from South Jersey. It was the year I was born.

"To be an artist — actually, to be a human being in these times — it’s all difficult. … What matters is to know what you want and pursue it. [Life] is like a roller coaster. It’s never going to be perfect — it is going to have perfect moments, and then rough spots, but it’s all worth it."

Robert Mapplethorpe: He was responsable for black and white portrait gracing the cover of Patti's album Horses. They were close friends and shared a small room at the Chelsea Hotel. I'm familiar with his photo work.

Dave Carnegie: American writer and lecturer and the developer of famous courses in self-improvement, salesmanship, corporate training, public speaking, and interpersonal skills. I read his famous book How to Win Friends and Influence People. It was first published in 1937 in an edition of only five thousand copies! It became a best-seller!

- Develop success from failures. Discouragement and failure are two of the surest stepping stones to success.
- If you want to conquer fear, don't sit home and think about it. Go out and get busy.

- Friendship... is not something you learn in school. But if you haven't learned the meaning of friendship, you really haven't learned anything.
- It isn't the mountains ahead to climb that wear you out; it's the pebble in your shoe.

6. HANDS ON

The brief for the day was to ask a friend to take a photo of us. Then we should take a photo of ourselves. It seems a simple task. But it wasn't. In fact I am in touch with several people that carry a camera almost everyday. But they are just some acquaintances of mine, not friends. I didn't feel at ease to go and ask them to take a photo of me even if I know that they would agree to do it.

Then I remembered that I have a cousin that's professional photographer. But I lost touch with him! Where can Luís be these days? Then I found a friend I could call and ask to do it. Unfortunately he has lots of free time because he's unemployed. So I set a meeting point. It would be on the beach, at Buarcos, near Esplanada da Praia. I went there and waited. It was a beautiful and sunny afternoon!  I took some photos of the waves. Then he called and said something had came up. I went to the beach and stared at the sea for a while. Then a man came with a little dog, a total stranger.I asked him to take a photo. He was in a hurry and I had to convince him. So it was like shoot and go! This is the result. I love the beach and spent a lot of time in this place.

The next day my sister visited and I asked her also to take a photo of me. It's in my office. I'm surrounded by children illustrated books, comics, books about painters and designers.
And finally I took a photo of myself. It doesn't say a lot about me except that I like to wear long hair and the color purple!
What I send to iversity was a collage of these last two. I think I failed. The photo of the beach was perfect!!! Because - "when fate hands you a lemon, make lemonade!" Oh, well. Learning.
