The social media pressure
A bit of good humor is always fine with me.
On my second quiz I got better results. But...
Yes, I am following tweets.
Yes, I am following it too...
...but with not much conviction. Something is not making sense to me. My question: if iversity platform was 100% satisfatory would we still be uploading stuff to and creating interactions on Twitter and Facebook?! I still hope that something is being done here. This is clearly a problem that needs a solution.
After giving this some thought during last weekend it was not my intention to upload anything to Twitter or Facebook. My idea was to stick to iversity platform. After all it's the official platform, it was created to give support to the course. I haven't shared my works on Facebook yet, I haven't engage a lot of discussions there either. But it seems there's a pressure from the instructors for us to go social (media). If we don't...well, we might fear missing something!
FOMO: is an acronym for the social disorder Fear Of Missing Out. FOMO is a label for the sadness one feels when knowing he/she is missing a good time with loved ones, the worry one feels that memories are being made that he/she will not have, or the anxiety one feels when deciding between multiple equally fun-sounding events.As I stroll the iversity platform I see that all students enrolled on the plataform but not all are using Facebook or Twitter. Many said they don't have accounts there. Ok, not a big deal. It's easy to get accounts. But why should a student get a Twitter or Facebook account when enrolling a course, even if it's a MOOC? This is what does not make any sense to me. I really wasn't expecting to have to use Facebook or Twitter more than I already do.

Social media has offered me opportunities and experiences that I consider positive. I am not saying social media is the devil. In fact social media creates an environment similar to the one where my parents grew up. They were born in a small rural village where everyone knew each other. Families knew each other, neighbours knew each other. They would salute on the street, meet on the stores, on the fields. All met on Sunday, at local church, on festivals and ceremonies. That was a community. But this kind of community was a small one. Everyone knew each other for real. They knew each other well enough to become friends or to hate each other! With social media it's a different story. You get the feeling of being social without having to go out and socialize. You don't build a relationship but you get friends or so you think, how can that be?!("Friend: a person known well to another and regarded with liking, affection, and loyalty; an intimate.) I What I am just saying is that I am not pleased that I am being pushed to use it more just because I am on Design 101. In fact I was expecting that Design 101 would keep me away from Facebook! I am saying don't give up on iversity platform. It's time to call in the person who designed the platform and put some pressure on good design. Houston, we have a problem. Fix it or we want our money back.

Finally, I don't agree to this point of view. Or at least the way this sentence was used. I can study social media but I don't need to be a user of social media to study it. Before being a designer one has to learn how to be one. I wasn't born a designer, in fact I will never be one but I can study Design. So I believe I can study things even if I am not using it.

In my opinion ABBA became famous because they were good. I mean they were not famous just because.
Today we have that inexplicable category of people that are famous because they are screen/stage oriented - they put on a show where ever they go, good or bad, that does not matter, as long as they get the others attention. They are on TV, on the cover of magazines, on internet, on the clubs. They open their mouth and we get no ideas or any kind of brilliancy. Sometimes we get shocking revelations instead. Some have good looks. They hardly can sing, dance or even speak proper Portuguese. Yet, they are famous. They are on reality shows but there's nothing real about them. Real persons are interesting and genuine. These are atificial and fabricated. This is not an exclusively national phenomenon, of course.

ABBA were the first band I remember listening to. I was a child of 12 when they won the Eurovision Contest. The song was so catchy. We had a dictatorship running the country. We had censorship. We were a closed country. Portugal was closed to outside culture, innovation. I had a black and white TV and a radio at home. TV had 2 channels. There were a few hours of broadcasting per day! When I compare my life at the time to the one my 11 old year nephew's has today there is no possible comparison. For a couple of years I enjoyed ABBA. Then it stopped. I started to listen to other bands. E even kind of grew a certain disdain for their music. Many years later and after many hours of music listening of all kinds I reviewed my opinion.I also watched this documentary about ABBA - The Winner Takes It Al - it helped me to realize that they were, in fact, very professional. ABBA were not just famous, they were good.

Stefano just bought an ipad mini. Well, watching this video just reinforced my idea that I don't need a smartphone, I need an ipad or a tablet or sorts. But this week I made a sketch of myself with a real pencil and in real paper. It was scary. It was an adventure. But I liked it also. I should buy myself more paper and more pencils. If possible I should buy myself more time. Not an ipad. Why an ipad? Why Paper 53? A digital sketchbook? Is there something new in it? Really? Why not being good at one thing I love? An ipad is just a tool, it will not improve my skils. It will not make me better at drawing. Or am I wrong? Nevermind. Ipad is cool, it's modern, it's trendy. And it's expensive and I don't have time for it right now...So why don't I make a return to the future?

6. HANDS ON
What did I enjoy the most - I enjoyed exploring the links the instructores provided. I tried to look into all. Sometimes I even searched for more information. I discovered many new things, persons, artists, designers, places, music, stories. This takes a lot of time also because I am keeping links and notes on a blog so I can get to it later, read more or add more stuff. I liked the discover. But it's a bit too much!!I feel English is sometimes a barrier.
Homeworks - One hour is not enough for the course. I did not enjoy doing homeworks very much because I am always running against time. So I try to do it simple instead of doing what I imagine. I guess I enjoyed drawing my portrait because it was something I don't usually do. As a consequence I am trying to establish a drawing routine every week from now on. I got many Likes for it (personal page). That was BIG incentive. I must say I am not sharing any of my works on FB, just here on the platform. I joined FB. But then I have been thinking about it and I don't want too.I know I'll get less exposure/interatcion. I comment a few works in the platform for every homework I upload. I got feedback for two of my homeworks. Maybe interaction isn't so good but it's the official platform and I can't be all over.
The homework that came out better was the one we were asked to take a sheet of paper and represent ourselves as an origami bird.
About the animated postcards - Stefano's animated notebook, 1st week, Saturday! It was informative yet so funny! I really liked it! I also liked the one with Saul Steinberg speaking about women and their mask smiles, it was Week 1, Day 5. The postcard for Week 1, Day 4 was the one I liked the least, the Dim Sum one.

Today's homework - I must observe my room and look at the objects I have have around me. Old things, new things. Very old things, very new things. Different things from different ages. Then I have to set up relations between them. I have to share a story about these things and shortcircuits between them. Like in Blade Runner movie, the future is a mix between old and new.
These are objects I have in my office. They are all in good conditions and can be used. It's books, sharpeners and rulers.

The first book in the photo is one of many I bought while I was trying to improve my drawing skills. It's from 1996. The second one is from 1957 and it was used in Portuguese schools. It was approved by the Ministery of Culture. This book belonged to an old lady. I never met her. In the 90's she gave her belongings away when her son died and she moved from her big house to a small one. The persons who took her belongings were about to put this book in the bin when I realized how precious it was. I kept it and the same story goes for the wooden rulers. I love it. I could never dump it. I read the Manual. Sometimes I still look into it! It has an old layout and illustrations that I find very interesting. It has just one or two black and white photos. The cover is made of fabric. The knowledge in it is still valid.You can compare the two books. Check the different layout.
I am also showing you common sharpeners of metal and plastic I can find in every store. But the fish one is less common. When I saw it I was fascinated by the colors. It's imported and I bought it in 2000 at Oporto. I have maybe 20 different sharpeners. I can't say I am a collector. But I like to buy a sharpener now and then if it has a new shape. Sometimes I also buy it abroad as a souvenir instead of a keychain or something like that because I know it's useful object. Take a look at that vintage 1940's Unicum Pencil Sharpener. UNICUM - Patented - INCA and MADE IN SWITZERLAND. It's made of solid metal. It has the maker's marks.It works with a blade.It was a gift from my grandfather to my mother in 1947. I am fond of objects that traveled from hand to hand. They have a story.

It's the sounds of Tokyo. They were collected in 1994 by this person, Gary Wolff, after he moved to Japan. In the end of the video he explains more about the sounds he collected. This site is really a great source on Japan.
I got to exchange some words with Gary over Youtube. He gave me the link to his site. The site carries his own name - Gary J. Wolff. In his site Gary shares his uniquely American perspective of Japan's absolutely fascinating and exciting culture. If, like me, you have an (old) interest in Japan this is a site you should visit!

Today I was asked to make a tshirt. The tshirt should tell something about me in an indirect way. The shirt has to tell things about me not because there is my name printed on it. It has to tell things about me because of the way it is made.
Yesterday I was really upset with the way this task run. I spent one hour and a half doing it. Too much! I planned something easy. A piece that we call a "cai-cai". It's a piece of fabric with just a seam where a rubber goes so it can hold around our body. I imagined a fabric necklace to go along with it. Something to wear on next year's Valentine's Day, right?! A used an old t-shirt from my boyfriend. For the printing I used acrylic ink.
The speech Miyake gave when he received the Kyoto Prize for art and philosophy (2006): “One Life, One Thread, and One Piece of Cloth: The Work of Issey Miyake”.
"The concept is based on fabric which has been industrially cut into tubes; a tube of cloth is fed into a machine which outlines and cuts the shape of the clothing - a dress, a hat, socks. The garment is cut from a long tube of fabric, which the customer is then able to cut into various shapes so there is no need for sewing machines."
“Miyake is weaving garments that don’t need to be sewn,” says Jack Lenor Larsen, an internationally renowned textile designer, “and that is the wave of the future.”

Car designer Giorgetto Giugiaro - I am not much into cars. I don't even like to drive. My favorite are those cars from the 50's. I found some more here and here. Concept cars looked almost like aircrafts. Car designer's imagination sure was flying high those days! But this guy seems to be important:

We were warned. Don’t start with the scissors. This task ia about making a project and then implementing it. Project + skills = result. We should build a paper world. Our paper world.
I cheated for this one. I just love paper cutting. But this week it was impossible to do such delicate work. Not with foggy eyes. I planned this in my mind between sneezes and fever. Honestly I just wanted to get away with it. So I just took some sheets of wasted paper that I always keep near me for drafts. I made some creases in it, I folded. A few cuts. This way I created a house, a tree, a boat, the sea. I crumpled some paper and created land. I am a paper doll. I am the result of a digital collage. That's my face alright. But that's not my body. Original photo did not have one so I made one. This is my universe. I left the security of my small and simple world, my house, and I stepped outside into the Design and art world. So now my head is filled with questions. What's this? What am I doing?

VIe arrondissement de Paris - It has a world famous cityscape, deeply rooted intellectual tradition, prestigious history, beautiful architecture and central situation,it's a major localization for art galleries and one of the most fashionable districts of Paris. You can find the Musée de la Bible et Terre Sainte at VIe arrondissement. Inside you can find the stone mask from the pre-ceramic neolithic period dates to 7000 BCE and is probably the oldest mask in the world.

6. HANDS ON
We were asked to get together with a friend. Then this friend would sketch a portrait of us. Then, we must draw our self-portrait.
This week I am sick. I got the flu. I am impatient, I want to get better but it takes time and one can't speed time. I asked my mother to make a portrait of me. It has been years since I watched drawing anything. But I remember clearly that when I was a child I would ask her to make a drawing and she would draw flowers and rabbits. Like me she was in panic. She said it was too difficult. She did not want to do it! I had to talk her into doing it!
As for myself I not used to use a pencil anymore. I just make a quick sketch in a paper and then I jump into the computer. I got lazy with pencil work. Many times I want to go back to use pencils to draw and colorize. But I know it takes more time than using Photoshop or a vectorial pencil and I give up on the idea. I was afraid I was not able to do it. My hand was shaking. I was unconfortable. Last time I made a portrait of a person it was my nephew's. We were spending summer holiday at the beach and we saw people making portraits in the street. He wanted one but it was expensive. So I promised to make a portrait of him. And I did. A quick pencil profile. I was surprised that it was easier than I expected but not too easy! I want to sketch more. This is what I learned today.

Another brick in the Wall - Pink Floyd
Inflatable pigs - The original Pink Floyd pig was designed by Roger Waters and built in December 1976 by the artist Jeffrey Shaw. In 2011 Pink Floyd's iconic flying pig has made a comeback - a new 30-foot, helium-filled balloon floated high above Battersea Power Station to mark the reissue of the band's 14 studio albums.
2. PLACES TO KNOW
Check Point Charlie - Checkpoint Charlie was on Friedrichstrasse, near Kochstrasse. It was the only crossing between West Berlin and East Berlin that could be used by Americans and other foreigners, and by members of the Allied Forces. The other six checkpoints were for residents of West Berlin or West Germany. Check this Youtube video. It was made before the Berlin wall coming down in 1989.

Benjamin Franklin - inventor of the glass harmonica. G is for Genius and Generous!
The glass harmonica was invented in 1761
Nina Simone - In the ‘60s, she became identified as the voice of the civil rights and wrote songs about the movement. I love her voice and songs.

A book - Home-Made: Contemporary Russian Folk Artifacts - Since 1994 Engineer/physician/artist Vladimir Arkhipov has gathered objects for his exhibition the Museum of the Handmade Object. He wandered Russia’s centres and hinterlands, seeking out the hand-made and the makers. This is a book about artisans and inventors, oh, well, why not, designers?
I found another book of his - Home-Made Europe Contemporary Folk Artifacts "Vladimir Arkhipov has travelled across Europe to further his collection for this essential second volume. The objects he has found are made by everyday people inspired by the desire to create something themselves rather than buying manufactured goods. The book suggests that many of these utilitarian objects transcend the dictates of necessity, and that this passion for the home-made is not simply a consequence of hard times."
